10. San Francisco Giants, 31-22

Jung Hoo Lee’s rookie year was cut short by a season-ending shoulder injury, but his .797 OPS+ this year has Giants fans salivating for more. He’s a two-way player, similar to Matt Chapman, who has both power and defense. Lee is more of a contact-first hitter with a patient approach, but he’s a solid defender in CF. Success has carried over from 2024 to 2025 for both Tyler Fitzgerald and Heliot Ramos. The Giants are only a game behind the Dodgers in the NL West as of Sunday night, and much of that success is due to these big performances. Even still, the offense overall has posted only a 96 wRC+ because Patrick Bailey and LaMonte Wade Jr. are both hitting under .175. Willy Adames has been underwhelming as the star addition, hitting .216/.298/.352 this year. Logan Webb has been state-of-the-art, and Robbie Ray looks like he did when he won the Cy a few years back. Both have a 2.67 ERA, and rookie Landon Roupp has had a good sophomore year with a 3.63 ERA. There is a big drop in the staff after Roupp, but the best bullpen in baseball allows for a few mediocre backend starters. Camilo Doval has returned to form, while Randy Rodríguez, Tyler Rogers, Erik Miller, and Ryan Walker have formed a core elite at shortening games.

9. St. Louis Cardinals, 30-23

St. Louis was not expected to be in the playoff hunt this year, Nolan Arenado would be in Houston right now were it not for his full no trade clause. Last year, they ran out of starting pitching and their veteran hitters struggled. This year, young guys Victor Scott II and Masyn Winn are breaking out, while former trade candidate Brendan Donovan is hitting .321 and tied for the league lead in doubles. Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker have both floundered this season, but the Cardinals have found other guys to produce. Matthew Liberatore has finally arrived with a 2.92 ERA in nine starts, while Steven Matz has a 1.74 ERA as a converted reliever. Sonny Gray leads a group of veterans in the rotation; all five guys have an ERA under 4.20. Ryan Helsley, another guy in many mock trades, has performed below his high standard this year, and this bullpen likely won’t finish in the top half by the end of the year. This team could still run out of steam, but right now the rotation is showing depth and it’s great to see their young hitters breaking out.

8. Minnesota Twins, 29-23

The Twins started out 13-18 in March/April, but they’ve been on fire in May. Their rotation is solid 1-4, with Joe Ryan and Pablo López leading the pack. Jhoan Durán is back, his four seamer is averaging triple digits, and hitters only have one extra base hit against him all year. Danny Coulombe has a 0.00 ERA in 19 games, while the Twins also have Louis Varland, Griffin Jax, and Cole Sands in the stable. Byron Buxton has stayed healthy in 2025 so far, and he has an .834 OPS. Veterans Harrison Bader and Ryan Jeffers both have OPS+ numbers over 115, and Kody Clemens has been a great pickup. This team feels light on impact bats however, and that’s why they’re ranked at #8 despite their excellent pitching staff. Carlos Correa has been terrible this year; none of their four starting infielders have an OPS north of .700.

7. Seattle Mariners, 29-23

The Mariners have performed well in 2025, but in the opposite way that many expected. George Kirby has been hurt all year before making his debut start the other day, while Logan Gilbert and Bryce Miller are still on the IL. The starting pitching has been fine considering the circumstances; their 3.86 ERA as a unit ranks 17th of 30 teams. Andrés Muñoz leads the league in saves and has yet to give up an earned run in two full months, but most other guys in the bullpen haven’t stood out. The Yankees have been easily the best offense in the AL, but the Mariners offense that struggled mightily in 2023 and 2024 now ranks 2nd in the AL behind New York. The Mariners have 40 HR power from their Platinum Glove winner, Cal Raleigh, and Jorge Polanco looks like he got a time machine back to 2021. Time will tell if they can sustain, but they’ll get their identity back with a healthy starting rotation.

6. New York Mets, 32-21

The Mets have the best starting pitching in the MLB right now, with a sparkling 2.89 ERA headline by Kodai Senga. Griffin Canning and David Peterson are both having career years, and the conversion of Clay Holmes into a starter has been extremely successful. This pitching doesn’t have frontline starters with postseason pedigree, but they’re performing so far. The bullpen has had similar helium, with unheralded relievers like Huascar Brazobán putting up a 1.16 ERA. On the offensive side, superstar Juan Soto has been quite underwhelming in his first two months as a Met. Perhaps the most telling stat is a .119 batting average with RISP, and that comes with a price tag around $800M. He’s also been lazy out of the box, occasionally lethargic on the bases or the field as well. That said, I do expect Soto and Brandon Nimmo to bounce back, they’ve been successful their entire careers. As much as Juan has disappointed, Pete “Polar Bear” Alonso has a league-leading 16 doubles already and Francisco Lindor has an .821 OPS.

5. Los Angeles Dodgers, 32-21

LA currently has $61M worth of starter pitcher salary on the IL right now between the oft-injured Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. Despite big spending on the rotation, the Dodgers have a 4.32 starter ERA, ranking 23rd in the league. It’d be much worse without Yamamoto, who’s got a league leading 1.86 ERA in 10 starts this season. Regarding the pen, Tanner Scott hasn’t been as dominant as his new contract would indicate. Blake Treinen, Kirby Yates, Evan Phillips, Michael Kopech, and Brusdar Graterol are all hurt. Should the Dodgers reconsider their stuff+ craze and its superiority over durable-yet-ordinary guys? Thankfully, the Dodgers’ lineup is dominant enough to compensate for now. They’re winning the NL West despite all these pitching injuries, buoyed by Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman. This lineup can’t score six runs every night though. They’ll need some of these arms to get healthy and start producing if they’re going to repeat as Fall Classic champs.

4. Philadelphia Phillies, 34-19

There is no shortage of brand name hitters in Philly, from Hall of Famer Bryce Harper to megabucks shortstop Trea Turner and homer machine Kyle Schwarber. Facing this lineup will certainly raise your blood pressure, but this bullpen also gives teams chances to get back in the game. The suspension of José Alvarado stings; they’re definitely going to need a reliever or two at the deadline. The rotation is set with big-game Zack Wheeler, a breakout year from Jesús Luzardo, and effective sinker ballers like Cristopher Sánchez and Ranger Suárez. These guys stay healthy for the most part as well — part of the winning formula for Dave Dombrowski and the front office. The core of this team continues to get older. They have to make the most of the talent while it’s still here.

3. New York Yankees, 32-20

The Yankees added Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt as the Mets lured Juan Soto to Queens. Both guys have been a big part of the best lineup in baseball, though not as big as Aaron Judge and his Ruthian .398/.487/.754 line in 2025. It certainly doesn’t hurt that role player Trent Grisham is doing his best impression of Lou Gehrig, with an extraordinary 12 homers in only 43 games. Gerrit Cole’s TJ is a heart-breaker for him and Yankee fans, a loss that will be felt even more in October. Fried and Carlos Rodón are a solid 1-2 punch, but both are lefties and Carlos can be inconsistent. Will Warren appears to have figured something out in his rookie season, pitching to a 4.05 ERA and 3.64 xERA. The trade for Devin Williams hasn’t really panned out: the velocity is off and the command isn’t good either. The bullpen has been otherwise lights out though, led by late bloomer Luke Weaver

2. Chicago Cubs, 32-21

Boasting arguably the most prodigious offense in the National League this year, the Cubs gambled on Kyle Tucker by trading Isaac Paredes and prospect Cam Smith to bring him to Chi-Town in a contract year. Tucker has been even better than expected, while they’ve also seen Pete Crow-Armstrong breakout from a good defender in center to an MVP contender. Justin Steele had to go under the knife after just four starts this season, but thankfully they’ve gotten an unexpected lift and 2.38 ERA from veteran Colin Rea in 41 innings of work. The bullpen is a heart attack; it’s readily apparent that Ryan Pressly shouldn’t be closing and Julian Merryweather had to be cut after struggling heavily this year. The Cubs look the best they have since 2016, when Theo went out and traded for Aroldis Chapman and Joe Smith. They’ll need to do something similar this summer to make a serious run.

1. Detroit Tigers

2024 was their last meaningful playoff run in years, but the Tigers have certainly arrived. Tigers are typically solitary hunters, and Tarik Skubal is an apex predator on the mound. On Sunday, he threw his first complete game, a shutout against the division rival Guardians. He’s the best pitcher in baseball, with solid starters like Reese Olson and Jack Flaherty rounding out a rotation 6th in the MLB in ERA. The bullpen is top 10 as well, and the offense is better than it was last year. Javier Báez and Spencer Torkelson have both revived their careers, while the Tigers have gotten much needed production at 2B from their free agent acquisition, Gleyber Torres. This club doesn’t have a weakness: three units (pen, rotation, lineup) are top 10 in the league and they’re solid defensively.
