The baseball world just finished watching Jack Flaherty’s last Cardinals start ahead of the August 1st trade deadline (6 ET). While thinking about the market this week, I noticed how concentrated the starting pitching inventory is. This is partly due to the fact that teams like the Angels and Mariners have not lost enough to go full sale.
Losing, A Cardinal Sin
At present, the St. Louis Cardinals payroll sits at $183M, five million below the MLB average. Fangraphs projects their playoff chances at slightly over 5% a week before the deadline, which is low enough for Cards brass to acknowledge plans to move some of their better players.
The State of the Mets
The Mets are currently operating at a loss of $138.5M, with a large majority of it ($108.3M) paid towards luxury taxes for going over the threshold. Many fans expect the Cohen family to have no problem going further into the deep end on the balance sheet…
