Reminder-Sebastian Walcott is the Future of Rangers Baseball

The Texas Rangers remain a very fascinating team to monitor – not just for the present during a playoff push, but in the future as well. When they made the trade for Mackenzie Gore, it painted a picture that they were evidently planning for life after Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi. The hope is Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker also continue to take the next steps. 

Life at the position player side remains interesting. Who is the core of this team? The trade for Brandon Nimmo has been fruitful and he’s been great in Texas. But after him? Who is it? Wyatt Langford, when healthy, is one of the best outfielders in baseball. He’s a piece who’ll be built around. What remains in limbo is the future of Corey Seager. Health hasn’t been on his side and there have been recent reports that the Rangers may move him in the winter and his money. He’s played a combined 276 games since 2023. His future might remain uncertain, but fans should remember that Sebastian Walcott is the future of Texas Rangers baseball. 

Prior to the 2026 season, Sebastian Walcott was a top-five prospect in all of baseball. It was certainly earned and deserved. Walcott put together a good showing in his first stint of Double-A ball, slashing .255/.355/.386 with a .741 OPS. His approach at the plate changed in a great way, lowering his strikeout rate by 6% from the season prior and raising his walk rate by 2%. He was a great multi-tool player, stealing bases, hitting a career-best 13 home runs, and while the defense at the premier position of shortstop does have concerns, his overall range and strength give him upside. 

In unfortunate news, Walcott suffered a torn UCL in his right elbow and underwent surgery in February 2026. If he was healthy, there would be a very real conversation that he could’ve been involved in the American League Rookie of the Year had he made the Opening Day roster. Sure, he hasn’t even seen Triple-A, but neither did Kevin McGonigle and look how that turned out. 

Walcott has recovered well ahead of schedule and has already begun rehabbing. He started in the Complex and already made impacts down there, stealing a base in his first game. In two games, he had three hits and two have gone for extra bases. 

He eventually made his return to Double-A, bringing excitement to Rangers fans. Walcott has done nothing but impress in his return to action.

Walcott has been the primary designated hitter. One thing worth monitoring is his raw power – a 70 raw power grade and a game power grade of 60. 

Walcott is someone who is someone who leans well into his size, generating enormous power with polarizing exit velocities. Walcott demonstrated it in just his third game back. 

Walcott pulled one to the left field side for his first home run back in Double-A. It was a scorching 109 MPH off the bat. He’s clearly made mechanical adjustments to his stance, standing slightly open instead of being closed. Even though it’s been only three games, Walcott is hitting .412 with a 1.324 OPS and hasn’t skipped a beat. Nearly half of his hits have been for extra bases and the power is on display. 

Walcott’s going to be a player to watch the rest of the season as he recovers. He is the future of whatever the Rangers intend to build.
